Nine hundred thousand. That’s how many players GGPoker had grinding simultaneously yesterday when their $300 million GG World Festival kicked off.
The site’s traffic counter peaked at 900,147 concurrent connections around 8 PM CET on Sunday. For context, that’s roughly triple what PokerStars manages on its busiest days. The previous GGPoker record sat at around 650,000 during last year’s WSOP Online bracelet series.
Pros React to the Numbers
Daniel Negreanu was among the first to comment. “This is what happens when you actually invest in growing the game instead of milking existing players,” he posted on X. The six-time bracelet winner has been vocal about GGPoker’s aggressive marketing approach versus what he calls the “harvest mode” of other operators.
Not everyone’s impressed though.
Doug Polk questioned the numbers on his podcast. “Look, I’m not saying they’re lying, but 900k seems… ambitious. That’s more than the population of San Francisco playing poker at the same time.” He pointed out that some of these connections could be players multi-tabling across different devices.
High stakes regular “LLinusLLove” offered a more technical perspective in the TwoPlusTwo forums: “Their servers held up better than expected. Usually when sites hit new peaks, everything starts lagging. GG’s infrastructure investment is paying off.”
Industry Watchers Weigh In
The timing matters. GGPoker hit this milestone just as PokerStars announced its 25th anniversary celebrations with $50 million in guarantees. One operator flexes traffic, the other flexes prize pools.
“It’s a d*** measuring contest, and players are winning,” says Alex Weldon from PokerFuse. “Competition drives innovation and value. Remember when sites used to brag about having 50,000 players online?”

But there’s skepticism about sustainability. Industry consultant Haley Hintze notes that “peak concurrent players during a massive series launch doesn’t tell the whole story. Let’s see where their average traffic sits in three months.”
Meanwhile, competing operators stayed quiet. PokerStars, 888poker, and PartyPoker issued no public statements about GGPoker’s milestone.
Players Chase Their Piece
The GG World Festival itself is delivering on its promises. Day 1 saw over $8 million awarded across various events. The $1,050 GGMasters Anniversary Special alone attracted 5,421 entries.
Rec player “TightIsRight55” summed up the general sentiment in chat: “Don’t care about traffic records. Just happy the guarantees are getting crushed.”
That’s the thing about online poker milestones - they only matter if they translate to better games. So far, GGPoker’s combination of marketing spend, software features, and tournament variety seems to be working. Their cash game festival running alongside the World Festival adds another $1.25 million in leaderboard prizes.
The Infrastructure Question
Handling 900,000 concurrent connections requires serious hardware. Conservative estimates suggest GGPoker needs capacity for at least 2.7 million database queries per second during peak times. That’s assuming an average of three tables per player.
Former Full Tilt Poker developer “CodeMonkey88” explained on Reddit: “This isn’t just about raw server power. It’s network optimization, database architecture, and geographic server distribution. GG clearly learned from the crashes that plagued early online poker.”
The real test comes during major tournament late stages. When thousands of players are watching the same final table while playing their own games, server load spikes dramatically.
What This Means for Poker
Some see this as validation of GGPoker’s approach. Others worry about market concentration.
“When one site has 900k players and others have 100k, that’s not healthy competition,” argues poker economist Andrew Brokos. “Network effects could create a monopoly situation where GGPoker sets all the terms.”
Counter-argument from the free market crowd: if players didn’t like what GGPoker offers, they wouldn’t show up in these numbers. The site’s Octopus rewards system and regular promotions clearly resonate with grinders.
One thing’s certain - other operators are scrambling to respond. Sources suggest PokerStars is planning “something big” for their summer series. 888poker’s XL Series already shows signs of increased guarantees.
The 900,000 player milestone might be just a number. But in an industry obsessed with metrics, it’s a number that’s forcing everyone to raise their game. Even if Doug Polk thinks some of those players might be counting twice.
