Value Bet

What it means

A value bet is a bet made with a strong hand that aims to get called by worse hands. The goal is extracting maximum chips from opponents who hold second-best hands. Unlike bluffs, value bets want action. You’re betting because you believe you have the best hand and want to build the pot.

How it works at the table

You hold A♥ K♠ on a board of K♦ 7♣ 2♠ 9♦ 3♥. Your opponent checks the river. With top pair, top kicker, you bet 75% pot (60bb into 80bb). This targets hands like KQ, KJ, or middle pairs that might call. The bet size matters - too small and you miss value, too large and only better hands call. Good value betting requires reading your opponent’s likely holdings and sizing accordingly.

Value betting is the primary way winning players profit at poker. While bluffs generate spectacular wins, consistent value extraction pays the bills. Common mistakes

Players often miss value by checking back strong hands on scary boards, fearing monsters under the bed. They’ll check back AK on K-7-2-9-3 because “what if he has two pair?” Another error is betting too large with medium-strength hands, turning them into bluffs by folding out all worse hands. The third mistake is failing to value bet thin on the river - checking back hands like second pair that beat enough of villain’s range to profit from a small bet.

Value betting connects directly to pot odds - your bet sizing influences whether opponents make correct calls. Understanding your equity against opponent ranges helps identify value betting opportunities. The concept also relates to protection betting, where you bet to prevent opponents from realizing their equity cheaply.
