Online Poker

What it means

Online poker is poker played over the internet instead of at a physical table. Players use a computer, tablet, or phone to join cash games, tournaments, sit and gos, and fast-fold pools.

How it works at the table

The rules are the same as live poker, but the pace is faster. Hands are dealt automatically, chips are tracked digitally, and players can often play multiple tables at once. Online sites may also offer tools such as hand histories, tournament lobbies, filters, and built-in statistics.

Strategic context

Online poker rewards volume, discipline, and technical study. Because players see more hands per hour, leaks show up quickly. The games also tend to be more data-driven, with players studying GTO, HUD stats where allowed, and solver outputs.

Common mistakes

New players often underestimate the speed and toughness of online games. Multi-tabling too early, ignoring table selection, and playing stakes too high for the bankroll are common errors. Rules also vary by jurisdiction, so legality and site licensing matter.

Online poker connects to rake, bankroll, variance, and sit and go tournaments. For operators, traffic and liquidity are just as important as software features.
