Flop

What it means

The flop consists of the first three community cards dealt face up after the initial betting round in Texas Hold’em and Omaha. These three cards arrive simultaneously and dramatically change the texture of the hand. The flop represents the moment when players move from pure speculation to concrete information about their hand strength.

How it works at the table

After preflop betting concludes, the dealer burns one card and deals three cards face up in the center of the table. Consider this example: You hold A♠ K♦ with 100bb effective stacks. After raising to 3bb and getting one caller, the flop comes K♠ 7♦ 2♣. You’ve flopped top pair with top kicker on a relatively dry board. The action continues with a new betting round starting with the player to the left of the button. The flop creates the foundation for all subsequent streets - turn and river cards merely modify what the flop established.

Strategic context

The flop defines hand categories and betting patterns for the rest of the hand. Dry flops like K♠ 7♦ 2♣ favor the preflop aggressor and create straightforward decisions. Wet flops like 9♥ 8♥ 7♠ produce complex situations with multiple draws and made hands colliding. Your continuation bet frequency depends heavily on flop texture. Connected, suited flops require more selective betting than disconnected rainbow boards. The flop also determines whether you’re playing for stacks or small pots - flopping sets, two pair, or strong draws often leads to large confrontations.

Common mistakes

Players often overvalue one pair hands on dangerous flops, failing to recognize when K♣ Q♦ on Q♠ J♥ 10♦ is actually quite vulnerable. Another critical error is playing the same way on every flop texture - betting 100% of your range as the preflop raiser regardless of board dynamics. Many players also misread flop textures, treating 8♥ 7♥ 6♣ as safe when it’s actually one of the most draw-heavy boards possible.

The flop works in conjunction with your position to determine optimal strategy. Early position players must navigate three streets of betting after the flop, while late position players can close the action. Understanding flop textures helps calculate the equity of different hand categories. The relationship between preflop ranges and flop interaction forms the foundation of modern poker theory.
