Double Up
What it means
A double up occurs when you win an all-in confrontation and approximately double your chip stack. The term applies whether you’re the short stack shoving or calling someone else’s all-in with a similar stack. In cash games, doubling up means winning a pot roughly equal to your starting stack. In tournaments, it’s often the difference between survival and elimination.
How it works at the table
You have 25bb in a tournament and find A♠ K♦ in middle position. After you raise to 2.5bb, the button 3-bets to 8bb. You shove for 25bb total and they call with Q♣ Q♥. The board runs out A♣ 7♦ 2♠ 9♥ 3♣. Your pair of aces beats their queens, and you win a 50.5bb pot (including blinds). Your stack goes from 25bb to 50.5bb - a classic double up. The exact amount varies slightly due to blinds and antes, but you’ve essentially doubled your tournament life.
Strategic context
Double up spots define tournament poker. Short stacks hunt for them while big stacks try to provide them selectively. The math shifts dramatically based on ICM considerations near bubbles or final tables. In cash games, doubling up simply means booking a nice win. In tournaments, it transforms your strategic options - suddenly you can apply pressure instead of just surviving. Understanding which hands play well in double up scenarios shapes your entire short-stack strategy.
Common mistakes
Players often wait too long for premium hands when seeking a double up, blinding down to 8bb when they could have shoved wider at 15bb. Another error is calling off your stack too light against aggressive players - just because you need a double up doesn’t mean J9s is good enough against an under-the-gun raise. Many players also misplay post-double up, immediately punting their new chips instead of adjusting to their improved position in the tournament structure.
